JACKALS COMEBACK BID DENIED BY DEVILS, FALL 7-4
January 1, 2010

The Elmira Jackals fell behind 5-0 in the second period on Friday night at First Arena in Elmira, N.Y. against the Trenton Devils and were unable to catch up as the Devils held onto defeat the Jackals 7-4.

Elmira was trying to make it three wins in a row, but the Devils came out flying, getting five straight goals before the Jackals got on the board. Jeff Prough had the first two goals of the game, Justin Pender connected on a slap shot, Ryan Ginand knocked a puck in battling in front, and Chris Poli scored on the power play to give the Devils a 5-0 lead at 13:50 of the second period.

Yannick Tifu, crashing the net, took a feed from Justin Donati at 17:32 of the second period to score his ninth goal of the season and make it 5-1.

Jarrett Konkle scored his fourth goal since joining the Jackals at 4:36 of the third period to make it a three goal game, with Justin Donati and Tifu recording the assists.

After Ginand scored unassisted at 5:02 of the third period, Justin Donati became the first ECHL player to reach 50 points in 2009-2010, backhanding a puck past Trenton goaltender Dave Caruso to make it 6-3. Six minutes later, Donati went top shelf past Caruso with the Jackals on the power play for his 18th goal of the season to make it 6-4 in favor of Trenton. The rookie ended the game with two goals and two assists, upping his league-leading total to 51 points this season.

The Devils ended the comeback bid when Tony Zancanaro scored into an empty net at 19:21 of the third period to give the Devils the 7-4 victory.

Julien Ellis, starting in goal for Elmira, was replaced by Tyler Sims midway through the second period. Ellis stopped 20 of 25 Devils shots, and Sims in replacement made two saves on three Devils shots in over 25 minutes of action. Ellis fell to 2-2-0-0 with the Jackals, while Caruso improved to 6-9-1-1 on the season.

The Jackals' record dropped to 15-14-2-2, while Trenton improved its record to 11-15-3-4.

The Jackals host the Reading Royals on Saturday night at First Arena. For tickets, call (607) 734-PUCK (7825) or visit the First Arena Box Office.
