Jackals Can't Hand 'Blades First Regulation Loss

ESTERO, Fla. - The Elmira Jackals could not pull themselves out of a four goal hole and dropped a 5-2 decision to the Florida Everblades at Germain Arena on Wednesday night. The loss dropped the Jackals' record to 2-4-0 on the season.

Wednesday night's first period continued a similar theme from last Saturday's game in Reading. The Jackals were sent to the penalty kill three times, while earning no power play chances, and ended up heading into the break trailing by one. Matt Carter and Danny Hobbs were tagged for back-to-back high-sticking minors midway through the stanza. Shortly after Carter's penalty expired Matt Pistilli received a sharp pass in the left wing circle and beat Elmira goalie Scott Greenham with a one-timer. It was Pistilli's league-leading eighth goal of the season and fourth on the power play. The Jackals killed off two of the three Florida power plays in the period and, with 16 saves by Greenham, stayed within striking distance of the 'Blades after one.

Florida's offense broke through in a big way in the second period and put the Jackals in a hole they wouldn't be able to climb out of. Brandon MacLean deflected a Pistilli wrist shot perfectly under the cross bar at 6:18 of the second to double Florida's lead. Then A.J. Jenks took over and notched a pair late; the first at 12:26 and the second at 19:18 with Pistilli assisting on each. The Jackals were limited to eight shots in the frame and Florida goalie Jesse Deckert turned away each one.

The Jackals put up a valiant effort in the third period led by their top goal scorer. Artem Demkov stole the puck from Florida defenseman Mike Cornell while on a shorthanded forecheck and put Elmira on the board 3:34 into the period. Demkov came through on special teams again, this time on the power play, when he deflected Mathieu Gagnon's wrist shot with 8:15 remaining in the game. Demkov's goals extended his scoring streak to four games, while Gagnon earned his first pro point. Elmira had a couple of strong chances to further dent the scoreboard, but Deckert robbed Rob Bellamy on a one-timer and Matt Carter hit the post on the rush. Florida's Mike Merrifield hit an empty net with just over a minute to play to seal the Everblades' win.

Greenham stopped 30 of 34 shots in net for the Jackals in taking his second loss of the season while Deckert turned away 24 of 26 for the win. Elmira ended the game 1-for-3 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.
