READING, Pa. - The Elmira Jackals were shorthanded eight times on Saturday night in Reading and the Royals' three power play goals proved too much for the Jackals to overcome. Elmira fell by a score of 5-2 and saw its record slip to 2-3-0 on the season.

The Jackals were intent on taking the early lead as they battled for their third consecutive win. Their effort led to five shots in the first three minutes of play, but Reading goalie Riley Gill was sharp early on and stopped each one. Momentum took a big swing in Reading's favor when Artem Demkov was whistled for high-sticking just over three minutes into the game. While the Royals failed to convert on that opportunity, and the next, their power play eventually broke through late in the first. Dustin Gazley hammered home a one-timer from the left wing circle at 14:54 to stake claim to the lead. The Jackals wasted little time answering, though, and Raman Hrabarenka blistered a wrist shot past Gill less than two minutes after Gazley's goal. That was how the first period closed.
Reading saw three more power play opportunities in the second and used them to help generate 17 shots against goalie Scott Greenham. Greenham was sharp in swatting away 16 of them, but Sean Wiles placed a perfect wrist shot under the cross bar from the left wing circle at 3:08 of the second to lift Reading in front by a pair. Later in the second, while killing a penalty, Jordan Pietrus had a great chance to tie the score on a breakaway but was turned away by a Gill pad save.
Elmira was well within striking distance at the start of the third period, but Reading was awarded a power play in the first minute of the frame, and things changed quickly. Just four seconds into the advantage, Matt Campanale beat Greenham with a slap shot for what proved to be the eventual game winner. Domenic Mondaro converted a rebound slightly less than three minutes after Campanale's strike to further pad Reading's lead. Demkov pulled Elmira back within two at 6:43 of the third and extended his goal streak to three games. The Jackals tried to turn the tide in their favor but another Reading power play goal, this time by Aaron Gens at 12:13, put the game out of their reach.
Greenham took his first loss of the season with 35 saves while Gill earned the win with 30 stops. Elmira ended the night 0-for-3 on the power play and 5-for-8 on the penalty kill.
