Elmira Downed by Wheeling, 4-1

Cason Hohmann scored for the fourth consecutive game and extended his point streak to six games but the Jackals suffered a 4-1 defeat at the hand of the Wheeling Nailers tonight at First Arena.

BOX SCORE

The Nailers struck first just 1:03 into regulation as Matt Tabrum stopped inside the zone along the left wing wall and fed a pass across to Danny Fick at the far point who walked in and ripped a wrist shot past the blocker side of C.J. Motte. Fick's second goal of the season was also the first shot on goal of the game for either side. The Jackals out-shot the Nailers 14-7 in the opening 20 minutes but Franky Palazzese shut the door.

The Jackals broke through quickly in the second period tying the game just 18 seconds into the frame. Guy LeBoeuf fired a shot that ended up on the stick of Chris Langkow in the slot who wisely fed it across the goal-mouth to a wide-open Cason Hohmann for the tap-in goal. Hohmann's 15th goal of the season and 31st point of the year leads all Jackals while Langkow's 17th assist is tops among Elmira skaters. The Jackals continued to control the play offensively during the second period and out-shot Wheeling 15-8 in the middle stanza, but a deflected knuckle puck at 15:05 regained the lead for the Nailers and proved to be the game-winning goal. Cody Wydo didn't get all of the centering feed while tied up with Hohmann in the slot, but the change of speed and direction of the shot knuckled past Motte. Mathew Maione and Jarrett Burton assisted Wydo's 10th goal of the season.

The momentum shifted in the third period as the Nailers scored two back-breaking goals within 36 seconds to secure the victory. First, at 6:40, Chris Ciotti buried a rebound off of a Pat McGrath shot for his third goal of the season. Andrew Cerretani also added an assist on Ciotti's insurance goal. Then, at 7:16, Matt Tabrum carried the puck down the right wing side on an odd-man rush firing a shot that was saved by Motte, but the rebound bounced off a skate and trickled over the goal line to increase Wheeling's lead to three. Tabrum's second goal of the season came unassisted.

C.J. Motte stopped 20 of 24 shots faced, but was handed the loss. Franky Palazzese stopped 42 of 43 shots faced to earn the win.
