Jackals Bested by Brampton, 4-1

Justin Bernhardt scored his first goal as a member of the Jackals tonight, but that was the only goal the Jackals scored in a 4-1 loss to the Brampton Beast.

C.J. Motte earned his second straight start this weekend and made his fifth straight appearance as he turned aside all 10 shots he faced in the first period. On the other end, Trevor Cann stopped all nine shots he faced in a scoreless first period.

Following an ice delay prior to the start of the second period, the Beast opened the scoring just 12 seconds into the frame. Bryan McGregor fired a shot short-side over Motte's shoulder for his second goal of the season. Mike Vernace assisted the opening goal and earned his second helper on Brampton's second goal of the night, which came just over five minutes later. Scott Howes capitalized on a power-play opportunity with a redirection in the slot for his fourth goal of the season at 5:57 of the second frame. Less than a minute later, the Jackals answered on their own power-play and cut the deficit back down to one. Mike Seidel fed a pass across the high slot to Spiro Goulakos, who fired a shot off the pad and onto the awaiting stick of Justin Bernhardt for his first goal of the season at 6:52 of the period.

Neither team broke through in the early stage of the third period, setting the table for an exciting finish. The Jackals pressed as time winded down, but a pass from Luc-Olivier Blain to Scott Howes in the slot for his second goal of the night and fifth of the year at 18:14 put Elmira in panic mode. They pulled Motte for the extra attacker off of the ensuing face-off, but Luke Pither scorer the empty-net goal at 18:41, ending the Jackals chances.

C.J. Motte turned aside 26 of 29 shots faced, but was saddled with the loss. Trevor Cann stopped 21 of 22 shots faced to earn the win.
