Three-Goal Third Period Carries Jackals to 6-3 Road Win in Norfolk
Sebastien Sylvestre scored twice and the Elmira Jackals (12-38-7-1) broke out offensively on the road to beat the Norfolk Admirals (21-31-4-0), 6-3, Saturday night at the Norfolk Scope. The win put an end to the Jackals 12-game road winless streak as Elmira earned its third win of the season against the Admirals.
The Jackals roared out of the gates in the opening period to build a 2-0 lead on the Admirals. The Jackals took advantage of an early power play to begin the scoring just three minutes into the game. Sebastien Sylvestre picked up the puck on the right side and he made a strong move before firing a shot in for the power-play goal, his 15th goal of the season. Sam Povorozniouk picked up the lone assist as Sylvestre snapped a 12-game goal drought.
Elmira continued their strong road period and then capped the period with a late tally for a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. Charlie Mosey got the puck along the right wall then scooted across the slot, before sending a spin-around shot which beat Philippe Desrosiers under the pads for a two-goal lead. Casey Thrush and Greg Amlong were credited with the assists on Mosey's fourth goal of the year.
The Admirals pushed back in the second period, but Elmira maintained a two-goal lead through forty minutes. Gabriel Verpaelst got the Admirals within one at 12:17 of the period on a power-play goal. Paul Rodrigues tried to stuff the puck in as he skated across the slot, but it was poked off his stick and went right to Verpaelst, who buried it into an open net to make it a 2-1 game.
The Jackals had an immediate answer for the Admirals goal, reclaiming their two-goal advantage just 13 seconds later. Sylvestre drove to the net and put a shot on goal, which was stopped, but Casey Thrush followed up and popped the puck in for his fourth goal of the season to put Elmira ahead 3-1 at 12:30.
Both teams knocked on the door a few more times in the second period, but Andy Iles was strong for the Jackals and the score remained 3-1 into the third period.
The Jackals ran away with it in the third period. Ian Young began a string of three-straight goals with a seeing-eye point shot at 6:04 that made its way through traffic for his second goal of the season, giving the Jackals a 4-1 lead. Exactly three minutes later it was Matt Stanisz who hammered a shot from the center point, which trickled over the line for his seventh goal of the season and a 5-1 Elmira lead. Sylvestre capped a three-point game with his second goal of the night at 10:54, making a terrific move out of the right wing corner to score an unassisted goal and put the Jackals up 6-1.
The Admirals tried to make a game of it later in the third, including some physical play and a few scrums. They got goals by Frankie Simonelli at 11:49 and Ben Betker at 12:21 to pull within 6-3, but that was as close as they got as the Jackals held on for a 6-3 win, snapping their 12-game road winless streak.
