Jackals Earn First Win of 2017

Matt Lane's First Multi-Goal Game Leads Jackals to 4-3 Win

Matt Lane scored two goals and the Elmira Jackals (8-21-5-0) held off a push by the Reading Royals (20-13-1-1) to earn their first victory of 2017, 4-3, Saturday night at First Arena as the Jackals celebrated their 10th season in the ECHL in front of 3,524 fans.

After a sluggish first period last night, the Jackals showed a 180-degree turnaround in the opening 20 minutes Saturday night, jumping out to a 2-0 lead. Davis Vandane opened the scoring at 6:05 of the first, hammering a slap shot from outside the blue line that found its way past Mark Dekanich for a 1-0 Jackals lead.

A few minutes later, Matt Lane scored his first goal in over a month to put Elmira ahead by two at 7:49. Charlie Mosey began the rush down the right wing and skated along the right wing boards. Mosey sent a pass toward the blue line, finding Lane trailing the play. Lane skated to the high slot before snapping home his third goal of the season for a 2-0 lead. After the goal, the Royals changed goalies, sending in Martin Ouellette to replace Dekanich.

Reading pushed back in the second period, but the Jackals found a way to take a 3-0 lead early in the middle act. It was Lane again who gave the Jackals a 3-0 lead just 5:05 into the second, burying a rebound near the left circle, with Casey Thrush and Greg Amlong picking up the assists.

The Royals upped the pressure the rest of the period and got back-to-back goals in the middle of the second to pull back within one. Kevin Sundher put Reading on the board with a rebound goal at 10:03 to make it a 3-1 game. Just over a minute later, Ryan Penny tapped in a pass to make it 3-2, scoring on a Jackals delayed penalty at 11:23.

Elmira would hold the one-goal lead into the third period, but the Royals would tie the game at 9:59 of the third. Robbie Czarnik was credited with the goal that just barely crossed the goal line, evening the game 3-3.

The Jackals responded a few minutes later with the eventual game-winning goal. Kenton Miller attempted to dump the puck into the offensive zone. Instead, the puck came to Sebastien Sylvestre in the neutral zone and he spun one towards the net from outside the blue line. The puck bounce past Ouellette to give the Jackals a 4-3 lead at 13:23.

Reading would end up with a late power play, but Andy Iles stopped everything thrown his way while the Royals had an empty net for a 6-on-4 advantage and the Jackals held on for the 4-3 win.
