Jackals Earn Point in OT Loss to Mallards

Jackals Rally From 2-0 Deficit, But Lose in Quad City, 3-2

The Elmira Jackals (9-33-6-0) overcame a 2-0 deficit to force overtime, but the Quad City Mallards (27-18-0-2) won in the 3-on-3 period, 3-2, Saturday night from the iWireless Center.

Although it was the first ever ECHL matchup between the Jackals and Mallards, the first period carried chippy play throughout the 20 minutes. That resulted in a pair of fights in the first period, with Sebastien Sylvestre dropping the gloves with Jack Nevins at 9:16.

The physical play continued later in the period with the second fight of the night. This time it was Luke Sandler and Alex Gudbranson, although Gudbranson was the only one penalized for fighting. Both Gudbranson and Nevins received game misconducts for their roles in the first period fights.

Through all the fighting, the Mallards grabbed a 1-0 lead late in the first period with a 4-on-4 goal. Brady Brassart converted on a right circle rebound that was created following a left circle shot by Guillaume Gelinas. The goal came at 19:15 of the first and was the only scoring in the opening 20 minutes.

Quad City extended the lead in the first minute of the second period, capitalizing with another 4-on-4 goal. Chris Francis skated into the Jackals zone along the right wing boards. He flung a pass across to Michael Parks, who hammered a one-timer under the crossbar for a 2-0 Mallards lead at 52 seconds of the period.

The animosity didn't end in the first period either, as the third fight of the game came at 8:23 between Kenton Miller and Andrew Panzarella. Miller got the last laugh later in the period, getting the Jackals on the board with a wraparound goal at 14:58. He and Sam Povorozniouk hounded for the puck behind the Mallards net and Miller eventually came away with it and wrapped it past former Jackals goalie C.J. Motte for a 2-1 game late in the second period.

Miller continued his strong play by tying the game with a beautiful power-play goal in the third period. He received a pass from Povorozniouk at the bottom of the right circle and made a strong move to beat Motte at 7:41 for his second goal of the night and 14th of the season, equaling the game 2-2. It's the fourth multi-goal game of the season for Miller.

Miller's goal forced overtime, where the Mallards would eventually prevail with a 3-2 win. Francis gathered the puck along the left wing boards, skated to the high slot and wristed home the overtime game-winning goal at 1:41, sending the Jackals to their 12th straight loss.
