Jackals Lose to Nailers on Third Period Flurry

Gage Quinney Nets Nailers Hat Trick in Third For a 5-4 Win Over Jackals

Gage Quinney potted a hat trick in the third period and the Wheeling Nailers (30-25-6-0) rallied from from behind in the third to slip past the Elmira Jackals (14-40-7-1), 5-4, Wednesday night at First Arena in just the second meeting between the North Division foes.

Goalies Jason Kasdorf and Doug Carr played a strong first period, combining for 26 saves in the opening 20 minutes, but Wheeling came through late in the first period to grab a 1-0 lead. The Jackals failed to clear the puck near their blue line and Johnny Daniel escaped in front against Kasdorf, where he lifted a puck past him at 18:36 for a 1-0 lead.

The Jackals responded with a two-goal second period to jump ahead to a 2-1 advantage after 40 minutes. Kenton Miller got it started with a power-play goal early in the period, after Sebastien Sylvestre dove across the high slot to prevent a Nailers clear. The puck ended up on Miller's stick at the left circle and he ripped a perfect shot under the crossbar to tie the game 1-1 at 3:11 of the second period, with Sylvestre and Nathan Moon getting the assists.

The game remained tied late into the second period because of strong play by the two goalies, until the Jackals scored with three minutes remaining in the period. Davis Vandane took a point shot which created a rebound at the right circle. Mark Bennett tracked down the puck then fed a pass to Sam Povorozniouk in the slot where he teed up a one-timer and found the top corner to give the Jackals a 2-1 lead on his 16th goal of the season.

The teams combined for six goals in a high scoring third period. Gage Quinney opened the scoring in the third with a tying goal at 4:03, pouncing on a rebound near the post. Quinney's initial shot was off the glass, but the carom came to the post and Quinney was the first to find the puck and he tucked it past Kasdorf for a 2-2 game.

Elmira had a good answer and reclaimed the lead four minutes later on a terrific goal by Povorozniouk. He gathered the puck in the neutral zone, skated to the right wing circle and made a toe drag move to snap a shot under the crossbar at 8:08, giving the Jackals a 3-2 lead.

The Jackals held that lead most of the rest of the way, until a few defensive lapses late. Quinney tied the game for the second time in the period with a power-play goal on a tip in the slot at 15:34. 17 seconds later Jordan Kwas fired home a shot from the left circle to give Wheeling a 4-3 lead. Less than two minutes later, Quinney completed the hat trick with a backhand goal on a rush down the right wing, giving the Nailers a 5-3 lead at 18:21.

The Jackals got one of those goals back on a deflection by Miller, his second goal of the night and 24th of the season, but Elmira ran out of time as the Nailers held on for the 5-4 decision.
