Jackals Lose to Thunder to Open Home-and-Home

Teams Will Wrap Up Weekend In Elmira Sunday Afternoon

The Adirondack Thunder (20-13-4-3) blew open what was a close game with four goals in the third period to defeat the Elmira Jackals (9-27-5-0), 8-2, Saturday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Adirondack raced out to an early 2-0 lead in the first period on the strength of back-to-back power-play goals. With Justin Kea sitting in the penalty box for boarding, Ty Loney buried his 16th goal of the season. He received a pass at the bottom of the left circle and showed patience, waiting for Jackals goalie Andy Iles to make a move. When Iles when down, Loney lifted the puck in for a 1-0 lead at 6:36.

Just a few minutes later, with Greg Betzold off for holding, Stepan Falkovsky, who won the hardest shot competition at the ECHL All-Star Classic, hammered a one-timer from the right circle on a cross-ice pass by Mikkel Aagaard. Falkovsky's sixth goal of the season made it 2-0 Thunder at 9:08.

The Jackals got going once they stayed out of the penalty box and Betzold made it a one-goal game just a few minutes later. Mark Bennett and Sebastien Sylvestre harassed the Thunder and forced a takeaway. Bennett found Sylvestre, who centered a pass to Betzold near the crease. Betzold tipped it in for his sixth of the year and a 2-1 game at 11:25.

The Thunder extended the lead in the second period, first getting a goal from Brian Ward at 3:12, converting a tic-tac-toe pass play with a one-timer from the right circle, making it 3-1. The Jackals again got back within one goal at 8:45 on a rebound goal from Sylvestre, who found the loose puck following a shot from Betzold. Mark Bennett also assisted on the goal, giving all three players two points.

Not long after that, the Thunder opened a two-goal lead again when Greg Wolfe slid in a rebound, just before Iles could cover the puck. The goal, at 10:14, capped the scoring in the second period, although the Jackals came within inches of scoring in the final minute. Betzold sent a rebound shot towards the net, but J.P. Anderson sprawled across and got his glove on it on the goalline, preserving a 4-2 game heading into the third.

Adirondack pulled away in the third period, scoring four goal on 11 shots to finish off an 8-2 decision. The Thunder got goals from Falkovsky, Patch Alber, Ward and Brett Pollock to ice the game over the final 20 minutes.
