Jackals Set ECHL Season-High Mark with 56 Shots but Fall to Norfolk, 5-2

The Elmira Jackals topped their own ECHL season-high mark with 56 shots on goal tonight against the Norfolk Admirals. However, despite the volume of shots, the Jackals were thwarted by Nic Riopel and fell 5-2. Allan McPherson and Chris Langkow scored for the Jackals.

The Admirals opened the scoring at 10:43 of the first period when Steven Whitney found an opening at the Jackals blue line and split the defense and broke in on C.J. Motte burying his 19th goal of the season on the backhand.

The Jackals out-chanced and outshot the Admirals in the opening frame, 19-12, but found themselves down late in the first period when Dean Ouellet raced down the left wing on a two-on-one and deposited his seventh goal of the season past Motte with just 12 seconds left in the period.

Norfolk added to its lead at 9:16 of the second period with Ryan Salkeld's first goal coming on a loose puck rebound in front of the Jackals net. The Admirals added a fourth goal shorthanded at 16:26 off of a two-on-one with Braden Christoffer shooting from the right wing side and seeing the  deflected puck flutter past Motte for his eighth goal of the season. Samuel Noreau and Wes Cunningham each added their third assist of the night on the shorthanded marker.

However, the pesky pack continued to push and claw their way into the contest with an early goal just 2:56 into the third period. Allan McPherson stepped out on the backside from behind the Norfolk net and tipped a pass from Chris Langkow past Nic Riopel for his 19th goal of the season, which ties him with Tyler Currier for the team lead. Cason Hohmann also added his team-leading 31st assist of the season on McPherson's marker.

Later in the third period, Chris Langkow banged home the puck from the slot on the power-play, cutting the deficit to two with 5:39 remaining in regulation. Langkow's 10th goal of the season was assisted by Justin Bernhardt and Allan McPherson.

However, the late push would fall short as Ryan Salkeld added his second goal of the night and season with an empty-netter at 19:13 to seal the win for the Admirals.

C.J. Motte stopped 26 of 30 shots faced but was handed the loss. Nic Riopel turned aside 54 of 56 to earn the win and set a new high-mark for saves in the ECHL this season.
