The Elmira Jackals continued their hot streak with a 4-2 win in their return home tonight against the Adirondack Thunder. The Jackals completed their third consecutive sweep of an opponent which started in Wheeling, West Virginia then continued in Brampton, Ontario before a return to New York and a home-and-home sweep of the Thunder. Shane Owen won his fourth straight start to begin his Jackals career making 36 saves in the winning effort. Kyle Bushee, Tyler Currier, Cason Hohmann and Darcy Murphy scored for the Jackals.
The Jackals quickly pounced on the Thunder with the opening strike coming just 2:14 into the contest. Colin Jacobs played the puck up the right wing side for Tyler Currier who walked down the wall and fed a perfect pass across the slot to Kyle Bushee for the backdoor bury. Bushee's fifth goal of the season and 20th as a member of the Jackals ties him with Wes Cunningham for the most goals by a Jackals defenseman in the team's ECHL history.
Just two minutes later the Jackals doubled their lead on the power-play. Matt Prapavessis worked the puck down to Matt Garbowsky on the half-wall who laid the puck in front and Tyler Currier pushed it past Drew Fielding for his 18th goal of the season. Garbowsky extended his point streak to six games with the helper and Prapavessis earned his first career ECHL point with his power-play assist.
The Thunder answered later in the frame with a lucky bounce off of Michael Kirkpatrick's pants coming from Patch Alber's point shot. Shane Owen turned aside 19 of 20 shots faced in the opening period.
With a one-goal advantage heading into the second period and the frame melting away with the Jackals still ahead, the contest looks very similar to last night's affair. But, with 1:01 remaining in the period, Gunnar Hughes deposited a backhand for his 11th of the season sending the game into the third period tied 2-2.
The Jackals would not be shaken and the pack prevailed at 13:23 of the third period with the eventual game-winning goal. Chris Langkow and Cason Hohmann drove hard into the corner on the forecheck forcing a turnover as the puck popped out to Allan McPherson in the slot for a shot that was saved by Fielding but Hohmann came through and jabbed the loose puck past the Thunder goaltender for his 17th goal of the season.
Just 1:29 later Elmira added an insurance marker as Justin Bernhardt chipped a pass to Chris Langkow who started a two-on-one rush and fed a perfect pass to Darcy Murphy for the tap-in tally. Murphy, who was making his professional debut tonight, earned his first professional goal while Bernhardt recorded his 100th career ECHL point with the assist.
Shane Owen stopped 36 of 38 shots faced to earn his fourth win in his fourth start as a member of the Jackals and his 17th overall win of the season. Drew Fielding allowed four goals on 32 shots and was handed the loss.
