Jackals Win Wild Saturday Shootout Over Thunder, 5-4

The Elmira Jackals defeated the Adirondack Thunder in a wild affair tonight at First Arena, 5-4. Jacob MacDonald and Cason Hohmann both recorded three-point outings as MacDonald scored two power-play goals.and Hohmann added the game-winning shootout goal. Scott Jacklin also logged a goal and an assist.

Despite a strong start, the Jackals found themselves behind 1-0 less than nine minutes into the game. Michael Kirkpatrick forced a turnover at the blueline and blasted a slap shot off of Niklas Lundstrom's pad and onto the stick of Garrett Ladd, who was waiting for the rebound in the slot. Kirkpatrick and Ladd flipped roles minutes later as Kirkpatrick received a pass at the blueline and streamed in, sniping a shot over Lundstrom to increase Adirondack's lead to 2-0. Ladd and Ryan Constant added the assists on Kirkpatrick's power-play marker. The Jackals answered on their first man advantage at 16:50 when Scott Jacklin benefited from a fortuitous bounce off of the glass allowing him to sneak his fifth of the season past Ken Appleby. Cason Hohmann and Jacob MacDonald added the helpers on Jacklin's power-play goal.

The Thunder regained their two-goal advantage at 4:45 of the second period with Louick Marcotte's seventh goal of the season coming moments after a golden scoring chance for the Jackals. Ryan Lomberg and Mitchell Heard added the assists. As the second period wore on, the level of distain rose, culminating in multiple power-play opportunities for the Jackals. With Gunnar Hughes in the penalty box for high-sticking, Jacob MacDonald took advantage and sniped Appleby with a quick wrist shot for his third goal of the season, assisted by Nathan Oystrick and Scott Jacklin. MacDonald struck again 1:03 later with another power-play goal as he blasted a slap-shot past Appleby to tie the game at 3-3. Cason Hohmann and Colin Jacobs earned the helpers on MacDonald's second goal of the night and fourth of the season. Hohmann completed the offensive surge with a rip over the shoulder of Appleby just 1:11 after MacDonald's tying tally. Spiro Goulakos and Kevin Clare were credited with the helpers on Hohmann's seventh goal of the season. In all, the Jackals scored three goals in the span of 2:14 during the second period.

The Jackals carried their one-goal lead into the third period and shut down Adirondack's offense for most of the frame, but a five-on-three advantage in the final four minutes allowed the Thunder a chance to tie the game. Jeff Silengo tapped in a rebound effort at 16:48 on the two-man advantage to tie the game at 4-4. Sixty minutes was not enough to settle the score, so a three-on-three overtime frame ensued. The Jackals added four shots on goal to Adirondack's one, but neither team could end the contest, so it would go to a shootout. The Thunder shot first, but Niklas Lundstrom was up to the task all three times, setting the stage for Cason Hohmann to bury the backhand game-winner in the third round of the skills competition.

Niklas Lundstrom stopped 44 of 48 shots faced and all three during the shootout to earn the win. Ken Appleby allowed four goals on 37 shots and one goal on three shootout attempts in the losing effort.
