Elmira struck first in the opening period with Jack Downing collecting his 11th of the season from the doorstep. Louie Caporusso made the key play by scooting from behind the net to the edge of the crease and taking a shot that goalie Peter Delmas sticked away. The rebound went right to Downing on the doorstep and he pounded it home. The Nailers responded a minute and 53 seconds later when Carl Sneep hit Luke Pither with a cross-ice pass. His one-timer eluded Maxime Clermont and gave Pither his 10th goal of the season. Rob Bellamy nearly restored Elmira's lead a few moments later, but his coast-to-coast rush was stopped by a Delmas stick save.
The teams took turns trading the lead in the second period, but with a pair of goals the Jackals ultimately entered the third with the coveted advantage. Andrew Hotham put Wheeling ahead for the first, and only, time in the game when his power play goal hit the back of the net with 6:32 gone by. The Jackals answered right back, though, with Kevin Harvey dishing a pretty pass for Jordan Pietrus to one-time home at 8:18. The goal was Pietrus' sixth of the season and second in as many games. The pace of play settled down after the quick exchange of goals, but a late penalty by the Nailers changed all that. Camped out on the doorstep, Downing slammed home a pass from Dustin Gazley at 18:22 to restore Elmira's lead at 3-2. Andrew Rowe assisted on the goal to extend his point streak to a career-best five games.
Clermont stole the show in the third period as the Nailers mounted a furious comeback attempt. The Jackals were shorthanded for the first 1:25 and the Nailers and off of the momentum of the advantage they ramped up their attack to the tune of seven shots over the first 3:50. Clermont stopped each one of them and 11 more over the course of the stanza to ensure the win. The Jackals managed 10 shots of their own but could not pad the lead as Delmas stopped each one.
Clermont's 43 saves were the most in a game by a Jackal this season and gave him his sixth win. The Jackals were 1-for-1 on the power plaly and 1-for-2 on the penalty kill.
