ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals dropped a 3-1 decision to the Reading Royals on Sunday evening at First Arena. The came as the Jackals were finishing a span of four games in five days and dipped their record to 34-22-7 on the season.

Elmira and Reading had not faced off in nearly a month, but the old rivals got reacquainted quickly in the first period. With lots of physical play and limited open ice, scoring chances were tough to come by in the opening 20 minutes. It was Reading that struck first, though, when Nikita Kashirsky took an entry pass from Yannick Tifu and worked himself free in the high slot. A low wrist shot beat Ian Keserich to the blocker side and gave the Royals the 1-0 lead. Brandon Blandina nearly tied it on a breakaway a few moments later, but Riley Gill made a left pad save that kept the Jackals off of the board. Gill turned in 11 saves throughout the period to insure his team stayed in front after one.

In the second, Reading's defense was the dominating force. The Royals limited the Jackals to two shots on goal while launching 11 on the Elmira net. Keserich stopped 10 of them, but T.J. Syner was able to sneak one past him just past the midway point. David Vallorani faked a wraparound and fed the puck back out short side for Syner to push across the line for his sixth of the season. The Jackals headed into the third period looking for a spark and they got one.

With a little less than eight minutes remaining in the third, off of a faceoff win by Jordan Pietrus, Rob Bellamy took off down the right wing with open ice ahead of him. He let loose a low wrist shot that found its way through Gill's legs and netted his 16th goal of the season. Pietrus picked up his 31st assist by winning the faceoff. With the Jackals pressing for the tying goal in the closing minutes, the Royals took a delay of game minor and put the Jackals on the power play with 1:37 to play. Keserich was pulled for the extra attacker, but Syner collected a loose puck in Elmira's end and hit the empty net for the insurance goal with 23 seconds to play.

Keserich took his second regulation loss of the season with 22 saves on the night. The Jackals ended the game 0-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
