In the first period the Titans were able to establish the early offensive pressure thanks, in part, to a power play awarded to them at 5:48. Trenton launched a pair of shots on the power play but Marc Cheverie turned away each of them. Those two were part of a busy 12-save period for Cheverie in his first home start since October 26. At the other end of the ice the Jackals tested Trenton goaltender Niko Hovinen with six shots, including one on their lone power play of the period. But, like Cheverie, Hovinen stopped everything he saw in the first and the teams headed into the intermission deadlocked at zero.
A key moment of the game took place in the second period when tempers flared 4:34 into the stanza. Ben Blood took a roughing minor out of a confrontation at center ice with Kelsey Wilson, but Wilson lost his cool completely. He knocked down Kevin Harvey from behind with a cross check and then speared Harvey while he was on the ice. Wilson received a game misconduct for his actions and the Jackals were awarded a five-minute power play. However, a Jordon Southorn tripping minor cut it short by two minutes and it ended up with Trenton scoring the only goal over that five minute span. Justin Taylor potted a rebound of a Kory Nagy shot with six seconds remaining on Elmira's power play and gave Trenton a 1-0 lead. Stephen Schultz doubled it 4:50 later with an accurate wrist shot over Cheverie's glove and under the cross bar. Elmira launched 12 shots at Hovinen in the second but could not convert one into a goal.
In the third, Jack Downing gave the Jackals life with his fourth tally of the season 8:19 in. After a point shot by Jordon Southorn failed to make it through a screen, Kevin Harvey collected the rebound low on the right wing. He wound his pass across the crease to Downing who jammed it in from the doorstep. Play opened up shortly after that when the teams played four-on-four for two minutes as a result of offsetting penalties to Rob Bellamy and Taylor. But the Jackals never got their offense fully on track and managed two other shots in the third besides Downing's scoring bid.
Cheverie totaled 29 saves in sustaining his third loss of the season. Elmira was 0-for-2 on the power play and 3-for-3 on the penalty kill.
