Jackals lose back-and-forth game to Walleye, 6-5

Two-third period goals down Jackals

Elmira, N.Y. - Despite their first Sunday sellout since joining the ECHL, the Elmira Jackals (19-13-5-0) fell to the Toledo Walleye (15-18-2-1) in a back-and-forth game at First Arena on Sunday, 6-5.

Toledo took a 1-0 lead into the second period after Jason Lepine drove in a shot from the high slot at 11:49 of the opening frame.

At 8:09 of the second, Christopher DiDomenico fired in a puck from the right circle on the power play to make it 2-0 in favor of Toledo.

Elmira's first comeback of the game started at 9:52 of the second period when A.J. Perry deflected in a puck from the top of the crease to make it 2-1, while Yannick Tifu backhanded in a puck from the slot at 10:49 of the middle stanza to tie the game, 2-2.

Toledo reclaimed the lead by scoring short handed for the third-straight game when Andy Bohmbach's deke beat Jackals goaltender Daren Machesney at 19:36 of the second to put Toledo in front 3-2.

Just moments later, however, Patrick Coulombe snuck backdoor and buried a Corey Cowick feed with three seconds to go in the period for a power-play goal to tie it, 3-3, entering the second intermission.

Bohmbach's shot at 2:54 of the third period from the right goal line gave the Walleye the lead once again, 4-3.

Jon Mirasty deflected a shot by Justin Donati into the net at 3:50 of the final period. The goal was the first for Mirasty since November of 2007. Tyler Donati then put a puck top shelf past Toledo goaltender Joe Palmer to give the Jackals' their first lead of the game, 5-4 at 4:12.

Tyler Doig was found backdoor for a goal from the left circle on a feed from DiDomenico to tie it, 5-5, at 11:57, while Dominic Osman put Toledo in front for good, 6-5 at 12:54, with a shot from the high slot that beat Machesney.

Machesney fell to 1-6-0-0 with the Jackals, making 18 saves, while Palmer improved to 6-9-0-0 by making 32 saves and holding off the Jackals down the stretch.

The crowd of 3,922 fans was Elmira's seventh sellout crowd of the season.

Elmira heads to Toledo for games on Friday and Saturday against the Walleye before playing Kalamazoo in western Michigan on Sunday.
