The Elmira Jackals and the Reading Royals travel 220 miles from First Arena to the Sovereign Center to play the second of three-straight games against one another, with the opening face-off set tonight for 7:05 p.m. On Friday night, Reading's Mark Owuya turned aside 47 of 48 Elmira shots as the Royals earned a 3-1 road victory over the Jackals. John Kurtz netted the Jackals' only goal, as Elmira fell in regulation to Reading for the first time since Nov. 13. The Jackals lead the Wheeling Nailers by two points for first place in the Atlantic Division entering Saturday's action.
LONG POINT STREAKS END
Dustin Gazley's 15-game point streak (8g-14a) and Artem Demkov's 13-game point streak both came to an end in Friday's loss. Gazley was held without a point for the first time since Feb. 1, as the rookie was attempting to become the first ECHL skater this season to earn a 16-game point streak. Gwinnett's Nikita Kashirsky also failed in his bid for a 16-game point streak on Friday night. Demkov did not record a goal or an assist for the first time since Feb. 4.
PENALTY SHOT FOILED
Reading's Matt Caruana became the second skater to attempt a penalty shot against Elmira this season on Friday night and the first since Kalamazoo's Brandon Svendsen had the opportunity in overtime on Nov. 19. Timo Pielmeier poked aside Caruana's chance, as ECHL skaters dropped to 10/38 on penalty shots in 2011-2012. The Jackals have not allowed a penalty-shot goal in over four years. Cincinnati's Jason Deitch was the last player to convert on the penalty shot against Elmira, with his goal occurring on Feb. 16, 2008.
