Penalties mar Jackals’ 5-2 loss to Stingrays
Friday, October 28, 2011Elmira, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals, short-handed 14 times in their game on Friday night against South Carolina at First Arena, fell 5-2 to the Stingrays to suffer their first home loss of the 2011-2012 season. South Carolina scored four times on the power play in the final frame to win its third-straight game.

Despite Elmira's three power-play attempts in the first period, South Carolina emerged from the opening frame with a 1-0 lead after Pierre-Luc O'Brien backhanded a puck in with the Stingrays short handed at 18:10 for his third goal of the season.
After a scoreless second period, Trent Campbell wristed in a puck over Jackals goaltender Timo Pielmeier on the power play to extend South Carolina's lead to 2-0 at 4:01 of the third.
Artem Demkov gave Elmira its first goal of the evening, sending in a puck on the power play from the left goal line on a feed from Louie Caporusso to make it 2-1 at 9:24.
The Stingrays controlled the play the rest of the way, taking advantage of nine third-period power plays with three additional man-advantage goals. Matt Pope scored at 11:18, Jerry Pollastrone struck at 12:38, and O'Brien notched his second at 13:37 to make it 5-1, South Carolina.
Caporusso scored his first professional goal on a penalty-shot at 15:26 with the Jackals short handed to close out the scoring, 5-2.
Pielmeier sufferred his first defeat of the season with 36 saves on 41 shots, falling to 2-2.
Daren Machesney, in net for South Carolina, improved to 2-2 with a 31-save outing.
The Jackals were whistled for 74 minutes of penalty time. The Stingrays received 20 minutes of time in the box.
