Jackals fire away in season-opening 7-3 win over Titans

The Elmira Jackals started off their 2011-2012 campaign with an offensive outburst, defeating the Trenton Titans 7-3 at First Arena on Friday night. Evan Barlow tied a Jackals record with six points, including a natural hat trick, as Elmira started off the year with a win for the fifth-straight season and won its first game under head coach Pat Bingham.

Artem Demkov gave the Jackals their first goal of the season when he put a puck into an empty net after a Titans turnover to put Elmira up 1-0 at 4:04.

Mike Radja scored the first of his two goals in the second period at 42 seconds, finishing off a rebound off a Josh Godfrey shot to make it 2-0. He then put home a centering feed from Barlow at 4:01 to give the Jackals a 3-0 advantage.

Mike Devin's blue-line bid with the Jackals on the power play deflected off a Titan and in at 9:22 to put Elmira up 4-0.

Peter Lenes sent in a centering feed from Jordon Southorn at 11:19 of the middle frame to give the Titans their first goal, 4-1. Blair Yaworski tapped in a pass from Dustin Cameron after an Elmira turnover 1:06 into the third period to bring Trenton to within two goals, 4-2.

Barlow batted in a rebound from a Radja shot with Elmira on the power play for his first goal of the contest at 5:50. He then wristed a puck over Titans goaltender Dave Caruso's stick from the left circle at 10:36 to make it 6-2. Barlow finished off his natural hat trick at 13:47 of the third, taking a feed from Dustin Gazley and snapping a shot through Caruso's pads to give Elmira a 7-2 lead. The Strathmore, Alberta native's six points were the most by a Jackal since Justin Donati and Maxime Gratchev each had six points in an 11-3 Jackals win over Gwinnett in November of 2009.

Rob Bordson knocked in a loose puck for the Titans at 18:55 to close out the scoring, 7-3.

Jackals goaltender Brian Stewart made 30 saves on 33 shots in his team debut to start off 1-0. Caruso set aside 26 of 33 shots in the loss.
