Jackals Weekly Release: Nov. 7
Monday, November 07, 2011The Elmira Jackals capped off the weekend with a 4-2 victory over the Kalamazoo Wings on Saturday night at First Arena, snapping a four-game losing streak in the process. The Jackals play the final two contests of their three-game homestand on Wednesday and Friday at First Arena against the Gwinnett Gladiators and the Reading Royals. Elmira closes out the weekend in Reading on Saturday and Sunday.
Elmira was just 2-7-3 all-time against Kalamazoo in ECHL play entering Saturday's game. Evan Barlow's two goals along with Timo Pielmeier's 34 saves helped reverse the Jackals' luck against the K-Wings.
The Jackals started the week on Friday in Trenton, taking a 3-0 lead in the second period. The Titans battled back though with four unanswered goals to pull off a stunning 4-3 comeback victory.
Elmira will see Gwinnett on Wednesday for the first of three times this season. The Jackals and the Royals meet on Friday for the first of 16 battles in the 2011-2012 campaign. To purchase tickets to see the Jackals, call (607) 734-PUCK (7825), visit the First Arena Box Office, or log onto JackalsHockey.com.
SPECIAL TEAMS PREVAIL IN VICTORY OVER K-WINGS
The Jackals and the K-Wings took two of the league's better power-play units into Saturday's contest. Elmira came into the game tied for fifth in the league at 21.2% while Kalamazoo entered Saturday coming off of a 4/9 effort on the power play in a win over Wheeling on Friday and checked in second in the league at 25.8%. The Jackals struck both times on their two power-play chances, including a goal just 10 seconds into their first opportunity from Barlow. Elmira held Kalamazoo scoreless on both of the K-Wings' chances. The Jackals are now third in the ECHL on the power play at 25.7% and are tied for eighth in the league with Cincinnati at 84.6% on the penalty kill.
BARLOW SITS ATOP THE LEAGUE
Barlow's three point night put him atop the ECHL in points/game at 1.88, as the Strathmore, Alberta native is tied for second in the league with 15 points in just eight games. He was Elmira's nominee for the ECHL's Player of the Week Award for Oct. 31 to Nov. 6.
NOT WORKING OVERTIME
The Jackals are one of five teams in the ECHL to have not played an overtime game through the first four weeks of the 2011-2012 campaign. Elmira holds the ECHL's longest overtime winless streak, having not scored a goal in sudden-death OT since Mar. 7, 2010, 20 months ago to today's date.
