Jackals Volunteer at Food Bank of the Southern TierTuesday, November 20, 2012
ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals got into the spirit of the Thanksgiving holiday by lending a hand and spending Tuesday afternoon volunteering at the Food Bank of the Southern Tier.
"This was a great opportunity for us to get out and give back to the community that supports the Jackals so well. The folks at the Food Bank of the Southern Tier do great work and we were more than happy to spend some time there today and help them meet their needs," said Jackals general manager Matt Hufnagel.
With the entire Jackals team attending the volunteer day, the players were split into two groups. Once helped sort and package pasta that would be delivered to hunger-relief member agencies that work with the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. The other group spent the afternoon helping to pack donated items for the Food Bank's Backpack Program. The nine-man crew helped prepare 600 bags that will provide school children in the Southern Tier with nutritious and easy to prepare food.
The Jackals also held a food drive at their two home games last weekend to collect non-perishable food items for the Food Bank of the Southern Tier. Thanks to the generosity of their fans, the Jackals were able to donate 1,575 pounds of food to the Food Bank.
