Glens Falls, NY The Adirondack Frostbite got a hat trick from Scott Drevitch as they beat the Elmira Jackals 6-1 Saturday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
The Frostbite came out of the gate looking determined not to repeat their efforts of the previous two games. Adirondack jumped on the scoreboard at 9:07 when Scott Drevitch blasted a shot from the blue line into the net, but not without some controversy. Elmiras goaltender Tyson Gajda appeared to have been interfered with, and he adamantly pleaded his case with referee Chris Brown to no avail. Elmira, visibly upset with the decision to allow the goal, responded almost instantaneously. A mere 19 seconds after the goal, defenseman John Donnelly threaded a pass from the Elmira blue line straight up the ice to a streaking Kevin Cooper just outside the Adirondack blue line. Cooper received the pass in stride, swooped past the Frostbite defensemen, and snapped a wrist shot through the legs of goaltender Derek Gustafson to tie the game at 9:26. Donnelly and Bobby Gates assisted on the goal. The Frostbite spent much of the period in the Elmira zone and out-shot the Jackals 10-4.
Forty-four seconds into the second period, Bobby Gates was called for a questionable hooking penalty; it was Adirondacks 3rd straight power play. Scott Drevitch would capitalize, scoring his second goal of the game at 0:58 to regain the Frostbites lead. They would add an insurance goal at 12:40, when Ryan Prentice was credited with a goal that was again argued by both the Jackals players and goaltender. Amid all the controversy the Frostbite would carry a 3-1 lead to the third period, with a 6-1 advantage in power plays.
In the third period things unraveled for the Jackals. Mark Hurtubise scored at 3:09, Drevitch finished off his hat trick at 14:26 and Ryan Bennett capped off the night with a goal at 17:54. The Frostbite dominated the last 40-minutes of the game, but also had the benefit of two, two-minute, five-on-three power plays in the third period. Adirondack out-shot Elmira 35-20 on the evening.
Derek Gustafson got the win for Adirondack, stopping 19-of-20; while Tyson Gajda took the loss, making 29 saves on 35 shots. Adirondack was 1-for-8 on the power play, the Jackals were 0-for-2.
The Jackals will return home for the first of three Fan Appreciation games on Wednesday March 15th as they host the Richmond Riverdogs at the First Arena for a 7:05 pm face off.
