Elmira, NY The Richmond Riverdogs took an early lead thanks to a funny bounce, on their way to a 4-2 win over the Elmira Jackals Wednesday night at the First Arena.
Coming into the game winless this season, Richmond took an early lead with one of the strangest goals you will ever see in the first period. With the rest of his teammates on a line change, defenseman Dan Vandermeer took a slap shot/dump in that buzzed high over the cross bar, ricocheted off the back boards, came back over the cross bar and then kicked back into the net behind goaltender Nick Boucher for a bizarre unassisted goal a 9:30. Rafal Martynowski made it 2-0 Richmond with a goal at 11:19 from Elmira College graduate Jason Cassells and the 0-5 Riverdogs would take that lead to the break
In the second period, Elmira again out-shot their opponents, but failed to find the net. Martynowski scored his second of the night, a power play goal, at 7:48 from Vandermeer and Brian Goudie to extend their lead to three.
Despite allowing goals on Elmiras final two shots, Richmond goaltender Mike DAlessandro stopped an impossible 49-of-51 for the Riverdogs first win of the season. Elmiras Nick Boucher was solid again in goal, making 31 saves on 34 shots, but his offensive support came along too little, too late.
11/4/05 @ Adirondack Adirondack 5 Jackals 2
Glens Falls, NY The Adirondack Frostbite scored 4-consecutive goals on their way to a 5-2 win over the Elmira Jackals Friday night at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
The Jackals took the lead at 10:02 of the opening period, when Sam Paolini smacked home a pass from Carl Drakensjo and Eddy Lowe from a 1-0 Elmira score. Then Adirondack took over. Hugo Belanger scored twice in the first period, First he tied the scored at 13:02 from Bob Rapoza and Mike Berry, then he gave the Frostbite the lead with 24 seconds remaining in the first period.
In the second period, the Frostbite picked up where they left off. Rookie Kevin Watters made it 3-1 at 3:52 and then Lyon Porter scored Adirondacks fourth straight goal at 5:37 to make it 4-1. Jackals head coach Perry Florio called his teams timeout after the 4th Frostbite goal and it seemed to calm his troops down. The Jackals stopped the bleeding and brought the deficit back within two goals five minutes later. Kevin Cooper scored a power play goal at 10:20, assisted by Trevor Burgess and Craig MacDonald, but Elmira would not find the net again.
Hugo Belanger would complete his hat trick at 6:38 of the third period, capping off the victory for the Frostbite. A minute and a half into the third, Jackals defenseman John Jarram was given a game misconduct after he jumped in to protect his goaltender, but was deemed by the referee to have left the bench, even though it appeared that Jarram had made a legal line-change before the whistle had blown and the incident occurred.
Adirondack goalie Kris Tebbs earned his 4th win of the season while stopping 27-of-29 shots; Elmiras Nick Boucher made 36 saves on 41 shots while taking the loss for the Jackals. Jackals forward Vince Malts left the game after sustaining a cut during a fight with Adirondacks Lyon Porter, he did not return.
Elmira, NY The Elmira Jackals lost a 2-0 lead and fell 3-2 to the Quad City Mallards Saturday night at the First Arena.
Elmira came out gunning in the first period and jumped out to the lead four minutes into the game. Rookie Chris Chaput blocked a clearing attempt by Quad City goaltender Jason Tapp, corralled the rebound and then fired the puck into the empty net before Tapp could recover. The goal was unassisted at 3:59. Fellow rookie, and Jackals leading scorer, Jarrett Konkle made it 2-0 at 9:22 with a sniper-like power play goal, assisted by Chaput and the Arena was overflowing with energy. The Mallards took away some of the momentum moments before the first intermission. Joel Pullman scored on a back-hand shot at 18:40 to make it 2-1 after one period.
In the third Elmira was handed another 5-on-3 man disadvantage situation and they came close to getting away with it, but to no avail. Chad Woodward banked his shot off the underside of the cross bar for a power play goal at 9:28, giving the Mallards their first lead and what would end up becoming the game winning goal.
Jason Tapp survived Elmiras early pressure to get the win, stopping 23-of-25 shots as Quad City improved to 4-3-1 on the season. Ryan McIntosh was fantastic in his second start of the season, making 33 saves on 36 shots, but was handed the loss as Elmira fell to 2-5-0.
Elmira, NY For the second straight night the Elmira Jackals fell one goal short of the Quad City Mallards, losing 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the First Arena.
After a scoreless first period where the Jackals out-shot Quad City 11 to 8, the Mallards took charge to score three consecutive times. Andrei Lupandin scored at 4:52 of the second period, a power play goal for a 1-0 lead. Evgeny Lazarev scored another power play goal at 9:34 as penalties again plagued Elmira in the middle session. Anthony Blumer made it three at 10:37 and with the Jackals on the ropes, the mandatory media timeout was called. This seemed to refocus the team and a mere 32 seconds later Elmira was on the board. Defenseman Mike Dombkiewicz hammered home a shot through the legs of goaltender Terry Friesen, assisted by Eddy Lowe and Sam Paolini. Rookie sensation Jarrett Konkle brought the team back within a goal on the power play as he scorched a slap shot past Friesen at 14:11 for a 3-2 score.
But Quad City got a second 5-on-3 advantage less than a minute into the third period and the would not let it pass by. Chad Woollard, who scored the game-winning goal Saturday night, crushed a shot from the point into the top corner at 1:17, the Mallards third power play goal of the game. With the net empty and six skaters on the ice, Elmira put together a perfectly executed face-off play. Center Chris Chaput won the draw back to the left point, Dombkiewicz passed it to the top of the right face-off circle and where Sam Paolini sent a laser past Friesen with 58 seconds left on the clock. For the second straight night Elmira had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but despite two nail-biting scrambles in front of the Quad City goal, the Mallards held on for their third straight win.
Terry Friesen earned the win in his second appearance of the season, making 38 saves on 41 shots. Nick Boucher was 36-of-40 in the loss for the Jackals who dropped their fourth game in a row. Quad City had 21 penalty minutes as a team and finished 3-for-10 on the power play. Elmira was 1-for-7 and had 27 PIMs.
