Elmira, NY Goaltender Ryan McIntosh earned his first shutout of the season as the Elmira Jackals scorched the Port Huron Flags 4-0 Friday night at the First Arena.
It was fitting that this contest took place on Friday the 13th, as the Flags probably wouldve wanted to be anywhere but the First Arena. Early into the first period Elmira jumped onto the scoreboard with a power play goal by Jason Sessa at 6:28. The goal was Sessa's 8th of the season, assisted by Kevin Cooper and Florian Iberer. At the 16:58 mark, the Jackals scored another power play goal to give themselves a two goal lead. Rookie defenseman Bobby Gates, making his professional and Jackals debut scored his first career goal with a one-time from the right face-off circle, assisted by Sessa and Iberer. The score stayed the same as the Jackals were able to stop a five on three Port Huron power play, and kept the puck away from goalie Ryan McIntosh as they out-shot the Flags 14-5.
At the beginning of the second period the Jackals had to start a man down as Chris Chaput's penalty for hooking was still in affect for five seconds. Elmira was able to keep the Flags scoreless and build further momentum in front of a ruckus crowd of 2,380. 12:33 into the 2nd period the Jackals extended their lead to three with a goal from Konstantin Kalmikov, his fourth goal of the season, assisted by Jarrett Konkle and Iberer's third helper of the game. At the end of the second the Jackals led the Flags 3-0 on the scoreboard and 22-16 in shots.
The Jackals started the third period with a 3:49 power play as former Jackal Bryan Cummings was called for an unsportsmanlike conduct minor at the 20:00 mark of the second period, adding to his high sticking call at 19:44. The Jackals were unable to score on the prolonged power play, but they were able to keep the Flags scoreless on another five-on-three Port Huron advantage six minutes into the third. Rookie forward Craig MacDonald and Flags defenseman Kam White were both given misconduct penalties at 12:18, cutting their nights short, but in the process White gave the Jackals a 7-minute power play with a minor for roughing and cross-checking major. Kevin Cooper would cap the scoring with a power play goal at 17:28, his 16th goal of the season, assisted by Sessa and Iberer. The assist was Iberers 4th of the game, his highest point total in a Jackals uniform.
Ryan McIntosh was scintillating in goal for Elmira, stopping all 24 shots he faced for the Jackals first shutout of the season. Former Jackal Jeremy Symington took the loss for Port Huron, making 30 saves on 34 shots. The Jackals finished 3-for-12 on the power play, while the Flags were 0-for-8. This is the Jackals 12th win of the season, their 5th in a row, and 4th consecutive home win as well.
Elmira, NY Despite a valiant effort in the first third of the game, the Elmira Jackals fell to the Flint Generals by a score of 5-2 Saturday night at the First Arena.
The Jackals scored the first two goals of the game to take the lead 2-0, but five unanswered goals by Flint proved to be the insurmountable lead Elmira could not top. Early into the action Flint forward Sean Starke took a hooking penalty setting the Jackals up for their first power play of the evening. Although Elmira could not capitalize on this power play, they did manage to strike first 14:27 into the period, scored by Chris Chaput for his 13th goal of the season. The goal was scored on Elmira's fourth shot of the game, assisted by Jarrett Konkle and Konstantin Kalmikov. Late in the period Generals forward Simon Rizk took a roughing penalty on Elmira's Chris Mann and was sent to the box at 18:13 in the period. Elmira made Rizk and the Generals pay on the third power play of the period with a goal by Jason Sessa; assisted by Kevin Cooper and Eddy Lowe. Elmira ended the period with a penalty on Carl Drakensjo for tripping, while leading Flint in shots 7-6.
The second period was all Flint as the Generals scored all three goals of the period as Elmira was not catching any breaks. Flint scored just over a minute into the period with a power play goal, and soon after each team received hooking penalties. At 12:58 Flint struck again to tie the game at two with a goal from Matt Elich, assisted by Derek Atkinson. Moments later Sean Regan was called for a high stick, followed a minute and a half later by a tripping call on Jackals captain Trevor Burgess to give Flint a 5-on-3 advantage. The Jackals were not able to keep the Generals off the board with 2-men down, as Terry Marchant put Flint on top 3-2 with under five minutes left in the period. That would be the last goal of the period for either team, assisted by J.P. Morin and Leo Thomas.
Elmira was unable to capitalize on two power plays early on in the third period when two Flint players were sent to the penalty box on separate occasions. Elmira's energy seemed to be deflating as the period went on leading to another disputed goal scored by Generals forward Sean Starke. Elmira fans yelled out against the unassisted goal in which the goal judge did not even see the puck go in, only referee Pat Britt saw the puck cross the goal line giving Flint the lead 4-2. With under 2 minutes left in the game Generals Jason Selleke and Chad Cavanagh tied together two well-timed passes to send Leo Thomas on a breakaway into Jackal territory where he threw a deke on Jackal goalie Ryan McIntosh and put the puck in the back of the net to give Flint their fifth unanswered goal of the game. That's the way the game would end for the Jackals, snapping their five game winning streak with their first loss of 2006.
Jason Saal earned the win, stopping 21-of-23 in goal for Flint, while Ryan McIntosh made 20 saves on 25 shots. Flint was 2-for-5 on the power play, Elmira finished 1-for-6.
Elmira, NY The Elmira Jackals earned their second shutout of the season, with a 1-0 win over the Flint Generals Sunday afternoon at the First Arena.
After a scoreless first period, where the Jackals out-shot Flint 10-9, Elmira jumped out in front early in the second. Kevin Cooper, who had a fantastic weekend, found the back of the net, his 17th goal of the season, assisted by Jason Sessa at 1:41 into the second period. The goal was Coopers second of the weekend, adding to a goal and an assist in Friday nights win and one assist on Saturday. The aggressiveness in the game increased as there were seven more minor penalties throughout the second, including four separate unsportsmanlike conduct penalties given at the 10:02 mark. With just seconds left in the period, rookie Craig MacDonald almost helped Elmira to a 2-goal lead on a great shorthanded effort. MacDonald beat Flints goalie Saal in a foot race to the puck and chipped it just over the goal as time expired. The Generals out-shot the Jackals in the second period 15-7, but goaltender Nick Boucher kept them out of the net with some dazzling saves.
The Jackals had to start with a man down for twenty seconds at the start of the third because Konkles penalty for hooking at 18:20 of the second carried over. Early in the third period, after killing off the penalty to Konkle, Elmira was awarded a four-minute power play when Flints Jason Selleke was called for an attempted spear. Despite several good scoring chances, the Jackals were unable to capitalize on the advantage. Seconds later Elmira was back on another four-minute power play as J.P. Morin received a double-minor for high-sticking. The Generals kept the Jackals, who again had multiple scoring chances, out of the net. With two minutes left in the game, defensemen John Donnelly and Chris Mann were both in the penalty box, giving Flint a big chance to get a late equalizer. Despite being down two men, Boucher and the Jackals were able to keep the Generals from scoring, hanging on for a gusty 1-0 win. The victory was the teams second shutout of the weekend and the season.
Boucher was spectacular in goal for the Jackals, turning away all 30 shots he faced in the game for his first shutout of the season and 5th win of the year. Jason Saal took the loss, stopping 25-of-26 shots in the process.
