Danbury, CT The Elmira Jackals shutdown the Danbury Trashers offense and handed them a 2-1 shootout loss Friday night at the Danbury Ice Arena.
The Jackals took the lead at 5:21 of the first period when Eddy Lowe banged home a rebound on Jackals first power play of the game. Sam Paolini and David Herring assisted on the goal, the only strike of the first two periods.
With two new additions that visibly solidified the Jackals defense, Elmira and goaltender Nick Boucher held Danbury scoreless for all of the second period and half of the third period. During the Jackals 7th power play of the night, Alex Goupil was sent free on a short handed breakaway by Mario Larocque. Goupils shot appeared to ricochet off the underside of the cross bar and fail to pass the goal line, but referee Pat Britt ruled that the puck had gone in for the game tying goal.
After a few late rushes, the third period came to an end with the scored still tied 1-1 and this contest headed to a shootout. Elmiras first shooter, defenseman Mike Domkiewicz beat Danbury goalie Jamie Platt through the 5-hole for a 1-0 lead and that would be all the Jackals needed. Boucher would put on a shootout clinic, stopping all five Trashers attempts, to earn the win.
Nick Boucher stopped 28-of-29 in regulation and 5-of-5 in the shootout for his second win of the season, and the teams second win over Danbury this year. Jamie Platt made 24 saves on 25 shots, and 4-of-5 in the shootout for the loss in his first start for Danbury. Danbury out-shot the Jackals 29-25. Elmira was 1-for-7 on the power play, while the Trashers finished 0-for-7.
Elmiras 4-game, 6-day trip rolls south to Virginia for a Saturday-Sunday stay in Richmond. Saturdays game is a 7:30 pm face off, while Sundays matinee is set for 4:05 pm at the Richmond Coliseum. Elmira will return to the First Arena Friday November 25th against Roanoke at 7:05 pm.
