Elmira, NY The Muskegon Fury scored five times and shut out the Elmira Jackals Saturday night for a 5-0 win in a rematch of last years Colonial Cup Finals at the First Arena.
Both teams played a very even first period, but at 14:17 on the power play, Jason Lawmaster slap shot from the red line ricocheted off the glass near the visitors entrance into the empty Elmira net, vacated by goalie Greg Hewitt who was attempted to catch the puck behind the goal.
The second period was a different story. The Fury turned on the pressure and began the pick away at the Jackals, slowly and steadily increasing their lead. B.J. Gaustad, Kevin Haupt and Jeff Nelson all scored to extend Muskegons lead to 4-0.
In the final period Gaustad scored just 23 seconds into the period on rookie goalie Kevin Kurk, who replaced Hewitt to start the period, the score was now and finished 5-0.
Brent Belecki earned his first shutout of the year by stopping all 24 Jackals shots on goal; Greg Hewitt took the loss, stopping 18-of-22 in 40 minutes of play; Kevin Kurk stopped 10-11 while playing the final period.
The Jackals will finish off the weekend with a Sunday 5pm game against the Richmond Riverdogs at the Richmond Coliseum.
