Richmond, VA The Elmira Jackals fell short Saturday night at the Richmond Coliseum suffering a 3-2 loss to the Richmond Riverdogs.
Elmira would strike first tonight, scoring just past the halfway mark of the opening period. Forward Sam Paolini scored his third goal of the second, banging home a rebound from David Herring at 10:50 for a 1-0 lead. Richmond had plenty of scoring chanced despite being out-shot by Elmira 11-9 in the first period. In the first 30 seconds Bobby Kukulka found himself all alone in front of Jackals goaltender Nick Boucher, but his wrist-shot clanged off the cross bar and failed to cross the goal line. Several minutes after Paolinis goal, Jackals center Chris Chaput cleared a J.J. Wrobel shot off the line, denying Richmonds feisty winger after he had worked his shot past Boucher.
In the second period, Richmond would level the score with a power play goal at 6:00 on a slap shot from the blue line from Dan Vandermeer.
In the third period, Richmond took a 2-1 lead at 7:11 when David Brosseau knocked in a rebound on a 5-on-3 power play. Jackals forward Kevin Cooper struck back at 11:34 to tie the game at two, scoring his fourth goal of the season, assisted by Chris Chaput and Jarrett Konkle. But Richmonds first and only even strength goal of the night at 16:56 when Jason Cassells finished a pass from Bill Vandermeer, broke the tie and won the game for the Riverdogs.
Mike DAlessandro stopped 26-of-28 in the win for Richmond, while Nick Boucher made 25 saves on 28 shots for Elmira. Richmond was 2-for-7 on the power play, Elmira was 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
Elmira will have an immediate shot at redemption against Richmond with a Sunday matinee at 4:05 pm at the Richmond Coliseum. Elmira will return to the First Arena Friday November 25th against Roanoke at 7:05 pm.
