Trenton, N.J. - The Elmira Jackals (33-20-2-2) earned their fourth victory in five games this week on Sunday afternoon at the Sun National Bank Center, holding off the Trenton Titans (19-29-3-5), 3-1. The four-win week was Elmira's third of the season and fifth since joining the ECHL in 2007-2008.
For the first time in two exactly two weeks, the Jackals took a lead into the first intermission. Dustin Gazley tipped a puck at center ice for Artem Demkov, who skated toward the zone and fired a puck between the pads of Dave Caruso to put Elmira in front, 1-0, at 6:52.
The Jackals and Titans traded second-period goals as Elmira took a 2-1 edge into the final frame. Tyler Hostetter drove a puck in from the right point through a screen that soared past Timo Pielmeier, tying the game at 7:52. Demkov put home a rebound for his second tally of the afternoon on the left side of the crease off a Corey Cowick shot, reclaiming Elmira's one-goal lead at 10:37.
Elmira limited Trenton to eight shots in the third period and a game total of 23, keeping the pressure away from Pielmeier as the clock wound down in the contest. Jean Bourbeau sealed the victory for the Jackals, pushing home an empty netter with just over 15 seconds to go, making it 3-1.
Pielmeier (13-9-1-2) set aside 22 shots for his third win of the season against the Titans. Caruso (11-17-3-2) made 34 saves in his first start with Trenton since Feb. 4.
Gazley extended his point streak to 14 games (8g-13a) with two assists on the afternoon, his point streak is the second longest of any skater this season in the ECHL, with 15 games being the longest. Demkov lengthened his point streak to 12 games (6g-7a) with his first multi-goal game since Oct. 21. The Jackals closed out a stretch of 12 games in 17 days with a 7-4-1-0 record during that stretch. The win was Elmira's first this week in which it did not trail and first since Jan. 15. The victory snapped a three-game losing skid for the Jackals in games against the Titans. The game was the first in a meeting at the Sun Center between Elmira and Trenton this season in which the winning team did not trail in the third period. The Jackals eclipsed their win total of 2010-2011 by one, earning their 33rd victory of the season
