Elmira, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals (31-26-6-3) were shut out 2-0 by the Reading Royals (40-20-2-3) on Sunday afternoon at First Arena. Goaltender Daren Machesney made 45 saves in net for Reading as the Royals locked up the Atlantic Division title with the victory.
Denny Urban drove a puck past the glove of Jackals goaltender Marco Cousineau from the top of the slot at 16:34 of the first period to put Reading up 1-0 with a power-play goal. The tally would prove to be Urban's second game-winning goal of the season.
Machesney stood tall in net for the Royals as Elmira peppered him with 36 shots over the final two periods. The former Jackals netminder earned his first ECHL shutout since the 2006-2007 season with South Carolina.
Chris Blight stole a pass at center ice and sent the puck into an empty net at 19:16 of the third period to seal the victory and the division championship for the Royals, 2-0.
Cousineau was valiant in defeat, making 27 saves on 28 shots as he dropped to 20-14-4-1. Machesney improved to 2-1 with the Royals and 4-13-0-0 on the season.
