Trenton, N.J. The Elmira Jackals ended the week with another shootout victory, the club's fourth in 2011-2012 and third of the week, defeating the Trenton Titans 2-1 at the Sun National Bank Center on Sunday to complete a perfect stretch of four games in five days. Jackals goaltender Brian Stewart improved to 8-0 in shootouts as a pro and has not allowed a goal in 21 opponent bids in five shootouts in his ECHL career, as Elmira extended its winning streak to five games.
Dustin Cameron took a feed from Adam Presizniuk and fired a puck past the glove of Jackals goaltender Brian Stewart at 18:29 of the second period, putting Trenton up 1-0.
Each game during the current winning streak has featured a Jackals' comeback, and Sunday's contest was no different. With Elmira on the power play in the third period, Mike Radja one handed a puck between the legs of Titans netminder Johan Backlund to tie the game at 6:41, 1-1.
After a scoreless overtime, Stewart's impeccable shootout record was put to the test. Stewart prevented Ryan Hayes, Rob Bordson, Cameron, and Andy Bohmbach from scoring. Artem Demkov and Jack Downing beat Backlund with backhand, forehand dekes, as Elmira prevailed with its fourth shootout win of the season and third of the week.
The Jackals last won five-straight games from Feb. 5 to 13 in 2010. In the victory, Elmira stepped into first place in the Atlantic Division with 24 points.
Stewart is now 8-3-0-0 in 2011-2012 and has won four-straight games. Backlund was 24/25, as he dropped his ECHL debut after being assigned to Trenton from Adirondack earlier in the day.
The Jackals, who kicked off a season-long seven-game road trip on Sunday, continue to Estero, Fla. to meet the Florida Everblades on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. Elmira returns home to host the Nailers on Dec. 26 on 4-for-$44 night. com.
