A 2-0 first period deficit proved to be too much for Elmira to overcome in a 6-3 loss to Texas Friday night in front of 1,383 fans at Ford Arena in Beaumont, Texas. Elmira received goals from Shawn Weller, Bruce Watson, and Luke Fulghum in the loss.
Danick Bouchard got the scoring started when ripped a drive from the high slot past Joel Martin (29 saves) 8:41 into the game for a 1-0 lead.
The Wildcatters made it 2-0 during a delayed penalty call coming against the Jackals as Ross Carlson threw a shot out of the corner from the goal line that deflected off of Martins pad with 4:37 left in the opening period.
Texas opened up the first of three three-goal leads when Carlson struck again at 7:50 of the second period on the power play set up by a bizarre set of calls by referee David Jones.
Elmira originally had Chris Busby in the box for hooking. As Kevin Ulanski was about to take a defensive zone face-off, his stick broke and he went to the bench to replace it. Jones refused to let Ulanski back into the face-off circle, with Ulanski eventually given an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for not going back to the bench. Head coach Steve Martinson then got involved and was assessed a bench minor.
The Jackals finally got on the board when Shawn Weller slipped past the defense down the left wing and potted his first professional goal with a backhander between the pads of Anton Khudobin (28 saves) to make it 3-1 at 9:25 of the middle frame.
David Schulz regained the three-goal edge just 43 seconds later with his first goal of the season at 10:08 to put the Wildcatters up 4-1.
Bruce Watson capped off the scoring with 2:27 left in the second when he finished a three-on-one break with Ulanski and Busby and snapped home his first goal in just his fourth game this season.
Luke Fulghum pulled the visitors to within 4-3 with a sharp wrister from the slot just past the midway point of the third, but it would be as close as the Jackals would come.
Bouchards second of the game and Brandon Benedicts five-on-three power play goal closed out the scoring as Texas took the first of a three-game set.
Elmira was held scoreless in three man advantages while the Wildcatters were two of eleven on the power play.
The same two teams meet tomorrow night at 8 p.m.at Ford Center. The Hill Top Inn Countdown to Face-Off begins at 7:30 on Magic FM (92.7/97.7) and at www.jackalshockey.com.
