Elmira, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals were overcome by the Kalamazoo Wings on Friday night at First Arena, falling 5-3. The K-Wings scored three times in the final period to earn the comeback victory over the Jackals.
Jack Downing buried a rebound on a backhand off of a shot by Matt Campanale that deflected in front to put the Jackals on the board first at 12:05, giving Elmira a 1-0 lead. The goal was the first of Downing's pro career.
The Jackals extended the league early in the second period to 2-0 when Mario Larocque drove in a puck from the left circle off of a scramble in front at 2:12.
Moments later with Kalamazoo on the power play, Darryl Bootland tipped in a shot by Dean Strong through the pads of Elmira goaltender Timo Pielmeier to make it 2-1, K-Wings, at 3:36.
Patrick Asselin tied the game at 13:48 of the second, redirecting in Sam Ftorek's shot from the right side to even the score, 2-2.
Dustin Gazley sent in a beautiful centering feed from Louie Caporusso as Elmira stepped back in front at 16:21 with a power-play strike to make it 3-2.
The K-Wings wasted no time in the third period to tie the game and then take the lead for good. Joe Sova's blue-line blast redirected into the net off of a Jackal at 3:11 to tie the game, 3-3, and then Taylor Ellington drove in a feed from Dean Strong from the left circle just 12 seconds later to put Kalamazoo in front, 4-3.
Strong added an empty netter at 18:42 as Kalamazoo pulled off the 5-3 comeback victory.
Pielmeier dropped to 3-5-0-0 with 22 saves on 26 shots. K-Wings netminder Riley Gill needed only 16 saves to improve to 7-2-0-0 on the season.
